ABOUT JOANNA

Yoga Instructor and Massage Therapist

Born in London, Joanna moved to Bath when she was one years old, attending school and college in Bath. She practiced Yoga, inspired by her mother from 19 years old, and went travelling at 20 years old, with her then boyfriend, for 14 months in Australia and Southeast Asia, continuing her daily Yoga practice. During this time she  discovered Thai Massage in Thailand and undertook a Thai Foot Reflexology course at the Old Medicine Hospital in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Once destined for an academic degree, then having a place at University for Fashion Design, Joanna finally studied Anthropology and Sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London, attaining a First Class Honours. Returning back to Bath after a year working in London in creative offices, Joanna went to Thailand in 2013 to teach English as a foreign language for a year and then to India to train to be a Yoga teacher at Abhijna School of Yoga and also studied Ayurveda theory, Abhyanga Body Massage and Ayurvedic Head Massage at Absolute Ayurveda, both schools in Kerala, India. She also travelled in India with some friends. Joanna has been teaching Yoga in Bath since 2014 when she started teaching for free at Ponte Vecchio Restaurant, Bath, in the early mornings. She continues to teach at the University of Bath, the Bath Spa University and the Bath YMCA. In 2015 Joanna undertook a CELTA course, a Cambridge qualification to teach English as a foreign language, and has taught at language schools in Bath since.

Joanna practised her Thai Foot Reflexology on friends and family since she qualified in 2001. She later massaged at some UK festivals, including Yoga Connect and Wilderness Festival and then undertook a Diploma in Raindrop and Vitaflex Technique at the Chu-Len College of Sustainable Health in Bristol. She was inspired to continue developing her alternative therapies interest and carried out the ITEC Diploma in Holistic Body Massage, Anatomy and Physiology and Business Practices at The London School of Massage in 2016, carrying out many case studies. At the end of 2017 she started working at the Gainsborough Bath Spa as a Massage therapist for 15 months, which as one of the top three spas in the UK, she was fortunate enough to work with highly skilled therapists who inspired her massage practices. Since then she has carried out Diplomas in many massage techniques from the London School of Massage and Gateway Workshops in the UK.  Joanna began developing her private massage clientele in March 2019 while she taught English as a foreign language at Kaplan International, Bath. Since October 2019 she is now just focusing on Metta Yoga and Massage.

Joanna believes in treating the client holistically and focusing on therapeutic remedy, maintenance and prevention. She has been interested in alternative therapies most of her life. They have helped her with a number of ailments, including insomnia, anxiety, aches and muscle tension. Not only have the holistic nature of Yoga and Massage treated these disorders but they have also offered her a host of additional physical and mental benefits. It is from a place of personal experience she authentically brings these therapies to her clients. Joanna likes to nurture and heal people and finds the whole process of communicating and connecting with the client, learning about the dimensions of their lives (physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual), and then finding solutions to bring them back to optimum health and balance, incredibly rewarding and also interesting.

WHY I DO WHAT I DO and some QUOTES

My father suffered with addiction, mainly alcoholism. I have spent most of my life trying to help him and heal his need to self medicate. I made good innings at points but his addiction was very entrenched and he very sadly died of related causes at the end of 2015. Yoga and massage bring people back into their body and work on trauma and emotional freedom, which, if my father managed to practice consistently, I'm pretty sure he would still be alive today. I will continue to try to heal people with these therapies. I always endeavour to honour the influence my father has had on me: encouraging travel; being positive, fun and experimental; a spiritual interest; having a loving heart, compassion and an open, non-judgemental character.

Another big influence on my interest and passion for holistic health and therapies and the person who got me into it all in the first place is my mother who has led a very healthy, balanced and natural lifestyle for as long as I can remember. She has been practising Yoga every day for years and years, eating a vegetarian diet, practising non-consumerism with a passion for the environment and sustainable living. I have definitely been made positively aware of an alternative way of life. I don't know when I would have got into holistic health if I didn't live it and see it so much growing up.

“I feel an indescribable ecstasy and delirium in melting, as it were, into the system of being, in identifying myself with the whole of nature..”
Jean Jacques Rosseau
