Joanna Leytham
Yoga Teacher & Massage Therapist

I was born in London and moved to Bath when I was one years old, attending school and college in Bath. I practiced Yoga, inspired by my mother from 19 years old, and went travelling at 20 years old, with my then boyfriend, for 14 months in Australia and Southeast Asia, continuing my daily Yoga practice. During this time I discovered Thai Massage in Thailand and undertook a Thai Foot Reflexology course at the Old Medicine Hospital in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Once destined for an academic degree, then having a place at University for Fashion Design, I finally studied Anthropology and Sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London, attaining a First Class Honours. Returning back to Bath after a year working in London in creative offices and in Bath at various career progressive endeavours, I went to Thailand in 2013 to teach English as a foreign language for a year and then to India to train to be a Yoga teacher at Abhijna School of Yoga. In India I also studied Ayurveda theory, Abhyanga Body Massage and Ayurvedic Head Massage at Absolute Ayurveda, both schools in Kerala, India. I also travelled in India with some friends. I have been teaching Yoga in Bath since 2014 when I initially started teaching for free at Ponte Vecchio Restaurant, Bath, in the early mornings. I taught at the University of Bath, the Bath Spa University and the Bath YMCA from 2014 until before the Covid pandemic hit and since then have opted to teach private classes and create my own Yoga class groups. In 2015 I undertook a CELTA course, a Cambridge qualification to teach English as a foreign language, and have taught at language schools in Bath since.

I practised Thai Foot Reflexology on friends and family since I qualified in 2001. I later massaged at some UK festivals, including Yoga Connect and Wilderness Festival and then undertook a Diploma in Raindrop and Vitaflex Technique at the Chu-Len College of Sustainable Health in Bristol. I was inspired to continue developing my alternative therapies interest and carried out the ITEC Diploma in Holistic Body Massage, Anatomy and Physiology and Business Practices at The London School of Massage in 2016, carrying out many case studies. I have carried out Diplomas in many massage techniques from the London School of Massage and Gateway Workshops in the UK.  I began developing my private massage clientele in March 2019 while I taught English as a foreign language at Kaplan International, Bath. Since October 2019 I solely focused on my business, Metta Yoga and Massage.

I believe in treating the client holistically and focusing on therapeutic remedy, maintenance and prevention. Holistic therapies have helped me with a number of ailments, including insomnia, anxiety, aches and muscle tension. Not only have the holistic nature of Yoga and Massage treated these disorders but they have also offered me a host of additional physical and mental benefits. It is from a place of personal experience I authentically bring these therapies to my clients.

I also love travel, culture and to learn. Most years I am studying a new course and travelling to a country I have not been to before. I loved India with all its colour, food, rituals and festivities and mean to go back. I continue to study more Massage and Yoga courses. I am studying another 40 hour Restorative Yoga Teacher Training course in June 2021; another 200 hour Hatha Yoga Teacher Training course from September 2021; CPD Diploma courses in Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage and Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage in June and July of 2021; and training in a Sports Massage BTEC at the ISRM in Clifton, Bristol from May 2022.
