The body often continues to hold stress long after the mind believes it has moved on. Even when life appears settled on the surface, the nervous system may still be carrying the imprint of previous strain. This can show up in subtle but persistent ways like jaw tension that returns without awareness, shoulders that ache and remain lifted and rounded, breathing that stays shallow rather than fully expanding, ongoing fatigue, or difficulty accessing deep rest even when you have quiet moments and are intentionally trying to relax.

These patterns are not signs of something being “wrong,” but more indications of how the body adapts to stress over time. When we experience ongoing pressure, whether it is emotional, physical, or psychological, the nervous system naturally shifts into protective states, and it can get stuck in these states if we do not allow it relief and to reset. Muscles tighten, breathing becomes more efficient but less expansive, and energy is conserved in ways that help us cope in the short term. However, when these states are sustained, the body can begin to feel as though it is never fully switching off, and then learns not to at the detriment of your wellbeing. Anxious, on-edge, restricted, all become all too familiar states, and the nervous system stays here whilst draining your resources until you reach burnout or breakdown.


From a holistic perspective, these physical patterns are deeply interconnected with emotional and mental wellbeing. The body does not separate experience into neat categories; instead, it holds memory, sensation and response as one continuous system. This is why periods of stress are often accompanied by physical symptoms such as neck and shoulder tension, digestive discomfort, disrupted sleep, headaches, or a general sense of being wired but tired.


The body needs support to unwind from these patterns, and your nervous system needs to be regulated, which requires time, calm space, safety, relieving touch, and consistency. Slow, intentional therapeutic touch can offer an environment in which the nervous system is gently supported to soften its protective holding. When the body begins to feel safe enough to release, breathing often deepens naturally, muscular tension and fascia restriction can begin to ease, and a sense of internal quiet may emerge that is difficult to access through conscious effort alone.


My approach to massage is slow, grounded and tailored to each individual. It draws on over twenty years of experience in yoga, movement and holistic wellbeing, as well as an understanding of how stress is held and processed within the body. Rather than working in a purely mechanical way, sessions are guided by presence, sensitivity and attention to the nervous system, with the intention of supporting deep rest, regulation and restoration.

Treatments are paced to support your nervous system in gradually settling into a parasympathetic state, the state associated with rest, digestion and recovery. This allows the body to soften safely over time, creating the conditions for deeper layers of work to be received without overwhelm.
