RELEASE. RESTORE. MOVE

Available in Bath and Bristol

Myofascial Release is a specialised form of hands-on bodywork that focuses on fascia—the connective tissue that surrounds and connects muscles and other structures throughout the body.

When areas of fascia and surrounding soft tissue feel restricted or tense, Myofascial Release uses slow, sustained pressure and gentle stretching techniques to work with these areas and encourage more comfortable movement.

At Metta Yoga and Massage, Joanna adapts the treatment to your individual body and areas of tension. Techniques may include sustained pressure, cross-hand stretching, skin rolling and other gentle myofascial techniques.

What is Myofascial Release?

Fascia is a continuous network of connective tissue throughout the body. It surrounds and supports muscles and other structures and contributes to how the body moves and responds to physical stress.

Areas of the body can become tense or restricted for many reasons, including repetitive movement, prolonged sitting, physical activity, changes in movement patterns and previous injury.

Myofascial Release takes a slower approach than many traditional massage techniques. Rather than using firm, fast pressure, the therapist works gradually with the tissues, allowing time to assess how the body responds.

Benefits of Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release helps to:

  • Ease areas of muscular and soft tissue tension

  • Support more comfortable movement

  • Improve flexibility and mobility

  • Reduce feelings of physical tightness

  • Support greater body awareness

  • Encourage relaxation

  • Provide focused attention to areas of restriction

  • Support more comfortable posture and movement patterns

  • Help you feel more relaxed and physically at ease

People often describe feeling lighter, freer or more spacious following a Myofascial Release treatment, although everyone's experience is different.

Joanna's Approach

Joanna uses a gentle, responsive approach to Myofascial Release, working at a pace that allows you to notice how your body responds.

The treatment may involve sustained pressure, gentle stretching, skin rolling and other techniques depending on the areas being addressed.

Myofascial Release can also be incorporated into a broader massage treatment where appropriate, particularly when working with areas that feel restricted or difficult to access using more conventional massage techniques.

What to Expect

Your session begins with a brief discussion about how you are feeling, any areas of tension or restriction and what you would like to focus on.

Joanna may use palpation and movement observation to help identify areas that could benefit from focused work.

The treatment itself is generally slower and more sustained than a conventional massage. Pressure and techniques are adapted throughout the session according to how your body responds.

The aim is not to force or push through resistance, but to work gradually and comfortably with the tissues.

Is Myofascial Release Right for Me?

Myofascial Release may be worth considering if you:

  • Feel restricted or tight in particular areas

  • Want to improve comfortable movement and mobility

  • Experience tension associated with prolonged sitting or repetitive movement

  • Prefer a slower, more sustained form of bodywork

  • Enjoy gentle but focused massage techniques

  • Are interested in developing greater awareness of how your body feels and moves

If you are looking for stronger, more targeted pressure, Deep Tissue Massage may be more appropriate. If you are looking for a more flowing and relaxing treatment, you may prefer Swedish Massage.

If you are unsure which treatment is right for you, Joanna can discuss your needs with you before your appointment.

How Myofascial Release Works

Myofascial Release uses slow, sustained pressure and gentle movement to address tension and restriction in the body's connective tissues.

The approach may influence the body in several ways:

  • Mechanical effects

  • Gentle, sustained pressure and stretching can work with soft-tissue tension and restriction, helping support more comfortable movement and mobility.

  • Sensory and nervous system effects. The slow, sustained nature of Myofascial Release provides sensory input that can encourage relaxation and greater awareness of how the body feels. Some people find that this helps them become more aware of areas where they habitually hold tension.

  • Movement and fluidity. Fascia contains connective tissue and extracellular fluid, and its properties can change with movement and mechanical loading. Gentle movement and manual techniques can support comfortable movement through areas that feel restricted.

  • Relaxation and body awareness. Because the treatment is generally slower and less forceful than some forms of massage, it can provide an opportunity to slow down, breathe and become more aware of physical sensations.

Some clients describe the experience as feeling “lighter,” “freer”, or more grounded afterwards. Individual experiences vary, and Myofascial Release is not intended to diagnose or treat a medical condition.
